Reykholt Aurora Borealis
Night Seven - Iceland - 2025
Blessed with a second night of intermittent clear skies, nature’s light show appeared once again!

Combing over the cloud forecast data for the next few hours, I noticed there was a small (perhaps one-hour long) break that several models predicted to pass right above Reykholt that evening. Normally, I’d make every effort to get away from a village’s lights (particularly in a town like Reykholt, which has several greenhouses), but we were honestly already in the exact perfect location for this gap. The solar storm strength was more than adequate, and I let everyone know it might soon be “go time.”
On the homestay’s property was a large shed, and I went out and set up my tripod, reckoning that would be a good place to be protected from the wind. I returned inside the house, grabbed the rest of my camera equipment, and opened the front door.
“Holy shit.” Just like that, the sky to the west had cleared and I could make out the faintest green light dancing in the sky.
“It’s time!” I exclaimed, and I proceeded to strut across the driveway to the shed. Astronomical events really do bring out my inner child!

In total, the storm lasted about 90 minutes. What a show and worth all the effort it took to get to this place at this time! More importantly, I was happy for my travel companions, who were finally able to see a proper aurora borealis event. I slept well that night, finally relieved knowing that at least one part of this trip lived up to the hype!
